Salt Ship Design, in collaboration with Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace, has been awarded a contract by the Norwegian Defence Material Agency to design new standardized vessels for the Royal Norwegian Navy. The scope of the agreement encompasses ship concept development and basic design services, with options for additional work. Two vessel designs are included—one larger ocean-going model and a smaller coastal variant—with plans to construct up to 28 ships for both the Navy and Coastguard.
This project constitutes the most extensive newbuild program within the Royal Norwegian Navy, marking a significant fleet renewal. Alongside Salt’s Norwegian design expertise, the construction and delivery of these vessels will be undertaken by Norwegian shipyards. Furthermore, several allied nations have expressed interest in acquiring these standardized vessels.
This achievement represents a major milestone for Salt, signifying a breakthrough in naval vessel design, validating Salt’s strategic expansion through its Bergen office, and comprising the largest series of Salt-designed vessels slated for production to date.
The contract requires substantial effort from our naval team through 2026 to deliver the technical documentation necessary for the upcoming shipyard tender process. Despite increased activity resulting from the opening of the Bergen office and expanded capacity across all locations, Salt remains committed to supporting new civil and naval projects.
