On-Site Harvesting Vessel

DESS Aquaculture Shipping AS in Grimstad, Norway, has ordered a new On-site Harvesting Vessel based on a design developed by Salt Ship Design. The new vessel will be built by Kleven at Myklebust Yard, in Gursken, Norway, and will be delivered from the shipyard first quarter 2018. The shipbuilding contract includes one optional vessel.

Marine Harvest ASA and Deep Sea Supply AS has recently entered into a Joint Venture to build, own and operate a range of fish farming vessels. This shipbuilding contract is one of the first investments resulting from this cooperation. Marine Harvest is a world-wide pioneer using On-site Harvesting Vessels as an alternative to traditional Live Fish Carriers. The concept is in many ways unique – in particular it will significantly increase the efficiency and bring down the cost related to transportation of fish from the fish farms to onshore processing plant.

The new vessel is 59,2m long and has a beam of 13,6m. She is designed to harvest and transport more than 400 tons of fish, and is equipped with a stun and bleed plant with a capacity of 100 tons per hour. The vessel combines new technologies and purpose made design solutions to significantly enhance fish welfare, hygiene, quality and environmental aspects. The vessel is also designed for shore connection during unloading and cleaning operations.

At Salt, we are very pleased that a global leader like Marine Harvest chose Salt as a partner to develop the first ever purpose made processing vessel of its kind.  For our designers, it has been very exciting to cooperate so closely with a team of experts with such superior fish farming expertise. The result is a very environmentally friendly, modern and efficient vessel.

This represents a very important contract, which adds to an already healthy order book. Salt has currently 13 vessel designs under construction at Norwegian and foreign shipyards. Unlike the current offshore market, fisheries and fish farming are doing very well and these segments represents an increasingly important market for Salt.
